Last week I was browsing through the iTunes store from my iPhone and decided to use some of my iTunes credits to purchase my first ringtone. To me a ringtone is not a 30 second snippet of a popular song. Although some song do work great as ringtones, I was more looking for something either funny or that sound more like a phone ringing.
By going to the iTunes Top Ten Ringtones, I found some Ringtones made by 2009 Beautiful Ringtones. I was not prepared to pay $1.29 for the first ringtone I found in the 100 Funny Ringtones album so I look a bit further in. By going to the album I discovered that I could buy 100 Ringtones (the entire album) for $3.99 instead of paying $1.29 for any one of these...
Right away I got taken by the opportunity to get 100 Awesome Ringtones for only $3.99 so I hit the BUY button. After a few minutes, all my ringtones were downloaded and I was hoping to start associating some to a few of my contacts.
To my surprise, I could not find the ringtones under SOUNDS in the iPhone SETTINGS. I sync the phone with iTunes in hopes to resolve the issue but nothing... I could not use the newly purchased SONGS as ringtones. Even in my iTunes' Library I could not see the 100 ringtones in the Ringtones section, they were all in the Music folder. I even tried to right click on one of the songs and hit the "Create Ringtone" but got an 11556 Error. Of course not the typical error that tells you that you can only create ringtones from songs purchased from the iTunes Store.
After searching around I discovered that it could be a iTunes Canada issue. I also found a way around this error. If you right click on any of the songs and click the Create AAC Version, you can change the the extension of the newly created file from a .m4a to .m4r and re-import that file into iTunes. iTunes will recognize the file as a Ringtone and place it in your Ringtones folder. Next time you sync, the Ringtone will appear in your Phone.
Note: Any songs that you want to convert to ringtones must be 30 seconds or less or they will not be transfered to your phone.
In the end I was not very happy with my purchase from the iTunes Store as it was very misleading and inquired to Apple. The customer service department informed me that it was a flaw in their system and was gracious enough to reimburse my $3.99. Thanks Apple. |
